How to unpin a post on Instagram

If you want to get rid of a pinned post because you need the space for another one or just don’t want it at the top of your feed:

▶️ In the first case:

You can unpin it by tapping on the other post you’d like to pin. Instagram will warn you that you’ve reached your limit and unpin the post you pinned first.

Remember, the order is based on when you pinned them, not when they were posted.

▶️ In the second case:

To unpin an Instagram post on your profile without replacing it, just follow the same steps for pinning it.

Meaning, tap the three dots that are at the top right of any post and tap ‘Unpin from profile’.

Now you know how to pin a post on Instagram in the app. Take advantage of Instagram pinning to highlight certain content on your account, so users can see it as soon as they go into your profile.

In this post, I’m going to show you how to pin posts and reels to the top of your profile in a step-by-step tutorial.

Instagram introduced the feature in June 2022 and it’s super easy to do in just a few taps.

The posts you choose to pin will sit in the top row of your main grid.

Before you get started, make sure to upgrade your Instagram app to the latest version, otherwise the “pin to top” feature might not be available.

Depending when you read this step-by-step guide, you might get a little notification to tell you that pinned posts are now enabled on your Instagram profile (see below).

How to pin an Instagram post to the top of your profile

Tap on a post in your grid to view it in full, then tap on the “three dots” menu at the top.

In the options that appear, tap on “Pin to your profile”.

You’ll get a quick message to confirm that the post has been pinned to your profile.

When a post is pinned to the top of your profile, Instagram will display a small pin icon on it in the grid view.

How to pin a Reel to the top of your Instagram profile

The process to pin a Reel to the top of your Instagram profile is exactly the same as described above for ordinary posts.

Tap on a Reel to view it in full, then choose “Pin to your profile” to pin it to the top of your profile.

As with photo posts, you’ll get a pop-up to confirm the post has been pinned and it will have a pin icon overlaying it in your Instagram grid.

How to unpin an Instagram post or Reel from your profile

The process to unpin a post or Reel from the top of your Instagram grid is just the same as pinning it there in the first place.

Simply tap on the “three dots” menu of an Instagram post or Reel and tap “Unpin From Your Profile”.

A quick pop-up will appear to confirm your choice and the unpinned post will return to its original position in your Instagram grid.

How many Instagram posts can I pin to the top of my profile?

You can pin up to three posts to the top of your main profile - any mixture of photos or Reels:

3 photos
2 photos and 1 reel
1 photo and 2 reels
3 reels
2 reels and 1 photo
1 reel and 2 photos

Why should I pin posts to the top of my Instagram profile?

Instagram says the option to pin posts to the top of your profile is “giving creators more flexibility to express themselves on their profiles.”

In real speak - this means that you can now easily showcase three of your key pieces of content in prominent real estate on your Instagram profile.
