Cant delete name manager excel?

Microsoft Excel helps your business organize finances, including bills, taxes and customer invoices. In Excel, named ranges enable you to describe the formulas entered in cells. This makes it easier to keep track of related entries in your worksheet. If you work with named ranges often, you may forget to delete them when you no longer need them. Named ranges can clutter up your worksheet and make it difficult for others to find the information they need. You can delete or change unwanted named ranges using the Excel Name Manager.

Delete a Named Range

  1. Open Microsoft Excel, then click "File" and open the document containing the named range you want to delete.

  2. Click the "Formulas" tab and click "Name Manager" in the Defined Names group. A window opens that contains a list of all the named ranges in the document.

  3. Click the name you want to delete. If you want to delete multiple names in a contiguous group, press the "Shift" key while clicking each name. For names in a non-contiguous group, press "Ctrl" and click each name you want to delete.

  4. Click "Delete," then confirm the deletion by clicking "OK."

Change a Named Range

  1. Launch Microsoft Excel and open the file containing the name you want to replace.

  2. Click the "Formulas" tab. Click "Name in Manager" under the Defined Names heading.

  3. Click the name you want to replace, then click "Edit" in the Name Manager box.

  4. Enter a new name for the range in the Name box. Change the reference for the name in the Refers To box. Click "OK."

  5. Change the formula, constant or cell the name represents in the Refers To field in the Name Manager box. Click "Commit" to accept the changes.

Hi. I am editing my links for a spreadsheet and can't get rid of a link. It is because it is in a named range, but I can not delete the name range. I am using Excel 97, does anyone know why I can't delete a name range that is refering to another worksheet? It has some funky charecters in the name of the range also. Thanks, Donna

Did you try to delete or to re-define the culprit via Insert|Name|Define?

Yes, a few times. I guess this has been in spreadsheets that have been copied a few times over the years. Must be gremlins.

I am having a similar problem except I CAN delete the named range when I am in one sheet but when I go to another sheet (in the same workbook) I have that same named range again.

I am trying to go in by hand and delete the named ranges (to break the links) and also wanted to further understand named ranges.

I thought 1 named range works for the whole workbook. Why does it remain after I deleted it once?

thanks

Names can be a bit confusing but heres my understanding. There can be names at sheet level and workbook level. Names defined at sheet level can only be deleted when that sheet is active hence your problem. To define a sheet level name include the sheet name when naming like
Sheet1!Test

You can also have a workbook name using the same name (eg Test) although I wouldnt recommend it. So if I used the name Test it would refer to the range at workbook level for every sheet except Sheet 1. Conversly in sheet 1 if I refered to the name Test it would be the worksheet level range.

To confuse matters more there can be relative and absolute references. See http://www.j-walk.com/ss/excel/tips/tip26.htm for details. I own the book Excel 2002 Formulas by John Walkenbach which explains names quite well. There may be other books (including Mr Excels?) which explain this.

EDIT:
Found another link as well. See http://www.j-walk.com/ss/excel/tips/tip58.htm with more info and download the J-Walk Name Lister. Notice that names can even be hidden !!
