  2. PayPal Is Launching a High-Yield Savings Account

PayPal is the latest company attempting to attract savers who aren't happy with today's low interest rates from traditional savings accounts.

The financial services company, which has traditionally been used to make digital payments between people and businesses, announced that its new app features include a high-yield savings account called PayPal Savings, which will roll out to U.S. customers in the coming months.

The account, provided by Synchrony Bank, will offer 0.40% annual percentage yield (APY) — although the rate could change before the PayPal Savings is launched — and will have no minimum balance or monthly fees. PayPal said via a news release that customers can automate transfers to PayPal Savings and transfer money between the account and their PayPal balance to make purchases with the platform.

Savings rates have been frustratingly low for years, with the interest rate for savings accounts in the U.S. averaging just 0.06% lately, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Even though the APY of high-yield savings accounts is nowhere near the above 2% we saw in 2019, putting your hard-earned money somewhere with a 0.40% yield is likely tempting, especially as inflation makes it hard for bank account interest rates to match rising prices.

But PayPal Savings' expected APY isn't as high as some of its competitors. Savings accounts for online banks Ally Bank and Marcus by Goldman Sachs currently have an APY of 0.50%, while Vio Bank offers 0.51%. Before choosing which high-yield savings account is best for you, check out Money's list of the best high-yield savings accounts of 2021 in which we compare their APYs, fees and best features.

The move into high-yield savings is the latest attempt from PayPal to establish its platform as more of a holistic finance app rather than just an electronic payment system like Venmo or Cash App.

The PayPal app's other new features include in-app shopping tools, and it will enhance existing features around bill management and getting paid up to two days early with direct deposit, the company said. PayPal also has a buy-now-pay-later offering and allows customers to buy, sell and hold cryptocurrency on the platform.

PayPal savings account instead of checking

PayPal serves as a handy method of paying, and getting paid, online.

PayPal has become an extremely handy way to handle money transfers over the Internet. If you sell a service, or goods, you can receive payments via PayPal; the money goes from the buyer's account to your PayPal account. You then transfer the money from PayPal to your bank account. The customary bank account to use is the traditional checking account, but savings accounts can be linked to PayPal as well.

Setting Up PayPal

By linking your bank account to your PayPal account, you can transfer money between them, either to buy something online or to receive money for goods you sell or work you do. In effect, PayPal replaces cash, checks, money orders and other traditional methods of payments among individuals and companies. To link a savings account, you first must set up an account with PayPal. You must provide your name and contact information, including address and phone. If you're selling goods, note that PayPal does not report such transactions to the IRS unless you carry out at least 200 transactions and do $20,000 in sales in a year (across all PayPal accounts).

Adding Bank Account

After your PayPal account is active, go to the Profile tab under "My Account" to link new bank accounts. Select "Update Bank Account," which takes you to the page where you can change bank account information. The "Add Bank" button here will allow you to add a new bank account. You can have more than one account linked, but you must designate a default account that PayPal should use automatically if you don't designate one for a transaction.

Required Information

On the Add Bank page, you select "Savings" at the top, where PayPal gives the option. You must enter your account and routing numbers, as well as the name of your bank. The routing number of your savings account is available from your bank. The number is not necessarily going to be the same as the routing number for a checking account held at the same bank.

Confirmation

You can confirm the account information immediately or choose to have the savings account confirmed in a day or two. With the latter method, PayPal makes two small deposits into your account, then asks that you transfer the deposits back to PayPal to confirm. This is supposed to ensure that you are the genuine account holder, and that nobody else has set up an account in your name for nefarious financial purposes. Be aware that the theft of account and routing numbers can still be an issue, even if you share the information with a secure website such as PayPal.

Is PayPal a checking or savings account?

No. It is not. They are not a bank, as far as I know one can or put money on deposit with them. They are a payment processing service, they collect money from a customer either through a debit or credit card and pay that money to the vendor that the customer is making a payment to.

Can PayPal be used as a savings account?

Yes. PayPal offers a PayPal Savings Account. Paypal is a fintech company, not a bank. That said, banking services are provided by Synchrony Bank, Member FDIC.

How do I change my bank account type on PayPal?

To change your bank or PayPal account details, go to Payout settings and select 'edit' or 'add'. After you've requested an update, you'll need to follow the security procedures to confirm you made the changes.

Why is my savings account shown as current account in PayPal?

Anyway, my simplest explanation is that it says your “savings account” is current, meaning that PayPal is able to access the account using the account information previously provided (e.g. you haven't closed the account).
