Het goede nieuws is dat tour operators een ‘garantie’ geven dat je de zeezoogdieren zal zien. Mochten ze echt niet tevoorschijn komen, dan mag je weer een andere keer gratis mee tijdens een tochtje. Het beste seizoen voor het spotten van walvissen loopt ruwweg van mei tot en met oktober. Maritiem Museum van British ColumbiaHet geschiedenis van de zeevaart aan de Canadese westkust zie je terug in The Maritime Museum of British Columbia. De collectie omvat 35.000 objecten, waaronder scheepsmodellen, oude kaarten, foto’s, logboeken en navigatie-instrumenten. Je ontdekt verhalen over piraten, ontdekkingsreizigers, scheepsrampen en luxe oceaanstomers. Er liggen ook enkele schepen, zoals de Tilikum – een aangepaste boomstamkano waarmee avonturiers van 1901 tot 1904 van Canada naar Londen zeilden. Reizen naar VictoriaVictoria ligt op het zuidelijkste puntje van Vancouver Island aan de westkust van Canada, niet zo ver van de Amerikaanse stad Seattle. De stad heeft een eigen internationale luchthaven, Victoria International Airport (YYJ) (www.victoriaairport.com), ongeveer 22 kilometer ten noorden van het centrum. Er gaan voornamelijk vluchten vanuit andere Canadese steden naar Victoria. Vanuit Nederland kun je niet rechtstreeks naar Victoria vliegen, maar je kunt de stad wel bereiken met een overstap. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld een rechtstreekse KLM-vlucht nemen van Amsterdam Schiphol naar Vancouver (10 uur), en daarna met een watervliegtuigje in 30 minuten naar de Inner Harbour van Victoria vliegen. Hiervoor kun je terecht bij Harbour Air Seaplanes (www.harbourair.com). Met de auto van Vancouver naar Victoria ben je ongeveer 3 uur onderweg. Hiervoor neem je de veerboot vanaf Tsawwassen bij Vancouver naar Swartz Bay. De overtocht duurt anderhalf uur en wordt verzorgd door BC Ferries (www.bcferries.com). Vanaf Swartz Bay is het een halfuur rijden naar het centrum van Victoria. Een andere optie is vanaf Vancouver de ferry te nemen naar Nanaimo (anderhalf uur) en dan 2 uur naar Victoria te rijden.
