Hello reddit, I am hoping to seek an advice or suggestion on how do I send a greeting message to this girl I follow on Instagram? Basically, I am hoping to make a great first impression.
I've been following this girl for about a semester. We go to the same college and we're in our early 20's. Unfortunately, we don't have any mutual friends that we know on campus. She seems like a nice person. Of course, I like most of her pictures. Most of her post are with her friends, family, and her running (no signs of her having a boyfriend). She runs a lot because she is a student athlete and plays track. I think this is where I have a trouble on trying to send her a dm because she has nearly ten thousand followers. In addition, I don't know she has some sort of app to keep track with her close friends and those she communicate with on Instagram?
I've asked some of my roommates about this but don't get the right answer. For instance, one of them suggest I should send her a dm stating "Hey, How was your day?" I don't think it is bad but I think she can ignore that message. I don't want to my dm sound like I am a creep. My overall thought about why I like this girl is that she's persistent, talented, pretty, smart, and a great smile.
I would like read off of some suggestions, examples, or advice from you guys. Girls' advice would be a plus. If she doesn't respond then at least I tried though.
(Update: I just want to say thank you for reading and answering. I think re-reading this post was a sign of my desperation of trying to ask this girl out, but ultimately, it was never bound to happen. Its best to move-on if she has no interest from which i learned.)

What is it you want to talk to her about? Is there a specific question you want to ask or are you just looking to chat?
I’m a guy and I’m very unlikely to respond to a DM from someone I don’t know (or have any mutuals with) if they start the conversation with ‘Hi’ or seem to just be looking for a chat. Unless I’m really bored. But you’re definitely more likely to get a response from someone if you actually start the conversation with what you want to say.
If you do want to ask a question, please think ‘is this creepy?’, ‘will I look back on this and feel ashamed?’ Before sending.
Maybe avoid the “I thought you seemed really nice” or “I’ve wanted to talk to you for ages” lines because they just seem kind of desperate and a little creepy.
And as others have said, don’t expect a reply. And if/when you don’t get one, DROP IT! You aren’t owed a response, they aren’t rude for not responding. And avoid being self deprecating as that just comes across sad to a stranger.
Remember, this person is a stranger
