Q. Most nutrients seem to be measured in mg but some are shown as mcg or I.U. How do I convert these measurements into mg? Show A. To convert micrograms (mcg) to milligrams (mg), divide by 1,000–or move the decimal point 3 positions to the left. 1000 mcg = 1.000 mg. But generally, you won’t need to convert between these two. We use micrograms for nutrients that occur in very small amounts (folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and vitamin K, for example). Instead of writing that a food contains 0.125 mg of vitamin K, it’s less confusing to write that it contains 125 mcg. You generally wouldn’t find milligram amounts of vitamin K in foods or supplements. Converting International Units (I.U.) isn’t so simple–because it’s a different conversion for each nutrient. The I.U. is an arbitrary amount based on the amount of a given nutrient needed to produce a biological effect. Here are the conversions for the most common nutrients.

The new regulations will be mandatory in 2019-2020. Voluntary compliance prior to that date is permitted, and it is expected that there will be a period of time when both types of labels will be on the market. The changes that will affect the application of DSID results are the changes in the units used to declare vitamins and minerals on supplement labels. Vitamin AVitamin A in the diet can come in different forms: retinol, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin. Some of these forms have greater bioavailability than others. Vitamin A has previously been reported in international units (IU). New labeling guidelines require reporting of vitamin A in the unit of mcg RAE, (retinol activity equivalent) in order to account for the differing bioavailability of the forms. Vitamin ENew guidelines require that Vitamin E content be determined based on the source of vitamin E and that it be reported as mg alpha-tocopherol rather than in IU. DNew guidelines require that vitamin D be reported in mcg rather than IU. FolateDietary folate can come in different forms; naturally occurring folates and synthetic folic acid. Previously all folates and folic acid were reported as mcg folic acid. New guidelines require that folates/folic acid be reported in Dietary Folate Equivalents (DFE) with mcg of folic acid in parentheses. Folic acid has greater bioavailability than naturally occurring folates. NiacinNew guidelines require that niacin be reported as Niacin Equivalents (NE). Dietary niacin can come in several forms, and the new unit accounts for tryptophan as a source of niacin. Is 1000 IU same as 1000 mg?1,000 IU is not the same as 1,000 mg. As of now, no vitamin or mineral has a conversion factor that is equal to one. Therefore, there is no case in which these two values could equal one another.

How many mg is a 1000 IU?Research also shows that consuming 1,000 IU (25 mcg) daily would help 50% of people reach a vitamin D blood level of 33 ng/ml (82.4 nmol/l).
Is 25 mcg the same as 1000 IU?(As a general rule of thumb, a dose of 1,000 IU (25 mcg) will raise blood 25(OH)D levels by around 10 nmol/L.)
